Workshare Compare Is Now Litera

In 2019, Litera acquired Workshare. If you're searching for Workshare Compare, here's what you need to know.

What Happened

November 2019

Litera, a legal technology company backed by Hg Capital, acquired Workshare for an undisclosed amount. The deal combined Workshare's document comparison technology with Litera's broader legal document platform.

Workshare had been a standalone company since 1999, known for document comparison and secure file sharing in the legal industry. The acquisition brought Workshare Compare under the Litera brand.

Today, the product is called "Litera Compare" and is sold as part of Litera's document lifecycle suite.

What This Means for Users

If You're an Existing Workshare Customer

Your software is now part of Litera. Support, updates, and billing come from Litera. The core comparison functionality remains similar, though it may be packaged differently.

If You're Shopping for Document Comparison

Search results for "Workshare Compare" will lead you to Litera. To evaluate the product, you'll need to go through Litera's sales process.

If You Want the Old Workshare Experience

Standalone Workshare purchases are no longer available. Litera positions Compare as part of a broader platform, which may include features (and pricing) you don't need.

The Shift Toward Enterprise

Under Litera, the product is positioned for enterprise buyers. This means:

  • No self-serve option. You can't sign up on the website. Sales calls required.
  • Pricing not published. You need to request a quote. See what firms report paying.
  • Focus on large firms. Integrations, compliance features, and support tiers designed for Am Law 200.
  • Bundled products. Litera may push their full suite rather than Compare alone.

For Small Firms

If you're a firm with 2-50 lawyers, the enterprise-focused approach may not fit. You'll likely pay more than you need to and spend time in sales conversations when you just want to compare documents.

Alternatives for Small Firms

If the Litera approach doesn't fit, consider these options:

The Bottom Line

Workshare Compare is now Litera Compare. The technology is still good. The go-to-market approach changed.

If you're at a large firm or need the deep DMS integrations Litera offers, it's still worth evaluating. Talk to their sales team.

If you're a small or mid-sized firm that wants document comparison without enterprise complexity, there are better options. Self-serve signup, transparent pricing, and clear change notes tied to the redline.
